My Interest in Sociology

Sociology is the study of human behavior in society. It is the study of how culture and social institutions affect the way humans think and behave.  The fact that sociology is so applicable to everyday life is what makes the subject so interesting.  Unlike many subjects, I am able to use the information I learn in this class in day-to-day life.  One of the ideas I have found most interesting throughout this course is how the media, family, religion, peers, sports and schools affect human behavior and shape people's personality.  Each of these agents of socialization impact people differently and often help determine the kind of person they grow up to be, whether they realize it or not.  The quote, "Society is the old man behind the curtain in The Wizard of Oz," (Gloria Steinheim) sums up this idea.  In other words, according to Steinheim, society controls people through media, peers, family and so on by telling them what to say, how to act, what to wear etc. and people do these things in order to be socially accepted.  This is just like how the inhabitants of Oz think the wizard is so special and powerful that they do what he says, and believe in his power without ever questioning him.
Taking this course has given me the opportunity to look at the world with a different perspective and has helped me to understand the relationship between society and human behavior.
